About the Irish Language School Sydney - Scoil Na Gaeilge Sydney

The Irish Language School Sydney—Scoil na Gaeilge Sydney—Inc (ILSS SnaG) is a community of people living in and around Sydney, dedicated to speaking and fostering the Irish language and nurturing Irish language education in New South Wales, advancing its presence across Australia, and engaging in initiatives supportive of its linguistic mission.

Established in 2007, ILSS operates as an independent not-for-profit association under New South Wales law. We elect our own committee, determine our activities and control our own funds.

Central to ILSS's mission is its provision of adult language classes, supplemented by weekend conversation groups and an annual immersion Winter School known as the ‘Scoil Gheimhridh Sydney.’ Funding for these endeavours primarily comes from class fees, augmented by generous contributions from various entities, including the Irish Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Muiris Ó Suilleabháin, and the Sydney St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, plus grants from Seachtain na Gaeilge, Glor na nGael, Ireland to support activities. Many Irish language organisations have supported us in kind over the years, including Foras na Gaeilge, Comhluadar, Saol, Foinse, and BBC Northern Ireland.

ILSS extends an open invitation to all interested individuals to participate in its activities, whether by attending classes or becoming a formal member. Membership is free and optional and gives access to a library of Irish language resources.

As of February 2024, ILSS is led by a dedicated committee comprising President Jason Ashmore, Vice President Seán McLoughlin, Secretary Aharon Danieli, Treasurer Greg Hurst, and General Committee members Cheryl Humphreys, Finn Ó Branagáin, and Therese Hanrahan.
